The Government Railway Police (GRP) has arrested a 35-year-old man from Andhra Pradesh who targeted railway passengers and robbed mobile phones in city’s crowded railway stations.
The GRP began investigation following a complaint from P.Chandran, 59 of Sithalapakkam. On June 18, he lodged a complaint with the GRP, Egmore alleging that his mobile phone was stolen when he was travelling from Egmore Railway Station to Tambaram. Based on his complaint, police launched an investigation and scrutinised CCTV footage. They nabbed the man who was moving in a suspicious manner on the platform and the suspect has been identified as ‘Kosu’ Venkatesh, 35 of Guntur district, Andhra Pradesh.
On searching his bag, police recovered 24 high-end mobile phones from him. Investigation revealed that he had frequently come to the city and indulged in snatching/ stealing mobile phones from passengers at Egmore, Pazhavanthangal Railway Stations, Guindy and Poonamallee bus stands. He also pretended to board the bus or train in the crowd and stole mobile phones kept in the shirt pockets of male passengers.
Meanwhile, Flower Bazaar Police has arrested two suspects who snatched a mobile phone from a hotel staff standing near Central Railway Station. According to police, Velu, 46, native of Perambalur has been working at a hotel and was standing near Central Railway Station on June 18. Two unidentified persons assaulted him and snatched his mobile phone. On investigation, police arrested two suspects- Bharat, 20 of Pulianthope and Ajaykumar, 20 of Pallavan Salai.
