Residents, activists protest over defunct escalator in Chromepet

Members of the People’s Awareness Association of Chromepet staged a ‘Black flag protest’ on Sunday, demanding action on the long-defunct escalator of the foot overbridge connecting the Chromepet bus shelter and the railway station.

Carrying black flags and wearing black badges, the residents and activists called out the Highways Department for swift action. “This issue has been going on for the last eight months. Today’s protest is to urge the Highways Department to repair or install a new escalator as soon as possible,” social activist V. Santhanam said.

The association members said the non-functioning, dust covered escalator had made daily commute especially hard for senior citizens, passengers carrying heavy luggage, and people with disabilities.
