Heavy overnight rains left many places, especially along the banks of the Periyar river, inundated in Ernakulam district of Kerala on Thursday (June 26, 2025).
Nearly 40 families – over 20 in a colony near an erstwhile powerloom company and another 15-odd in Bosco Colony – in Edamula division of Eloor municipality were hit after floodwaters started invading their houses shortly after Wednesday midnight. Many families were shifted to two relief camps opened at a trade union office and the Kuttikkattukara Government UP School, while the rest chose to move in with their relatives.
“Water started entering our house on Wednesday around 10 p.m. and it rose to knee high shortly after midnight. A fortnight ago, water had entered our hall and kitchen but receded very soon. This time around all rooms remain flooded,” said P.S. Adithya, a member of one of the affected families. They moved to her mother’s ancestral home after stacking their valuables in elevated spaces.
K.M. Ismail, Edamula division councillor, rued that unexpected flooding during night makes the situation worse.
Sanjay Rony, a member of another affected family in Bosco Colony, said that the speed at which the water kept rising set the alarm bells ringing. “Since we are used to flooding almost every year, we know when the situation turns serious,” he said even as he moved out from the house with eight members of his family.
Water was rising the coastal area of Puthenvelikkara village as well.
Water level has kept rising, crossing the flood warning level in many stations, and showing a rising trend along the Periyar river basin.
At the Kalady monitoring station, the water level was recorded at 7.378 metres against the flood warning level of 6.92 and at Marthandavarma 3.86 metres against 3.19 metres as on Thursday morning.
Chellanam panchayat, which has been bearing the brunt of sea erosion since last month, remain relatively unaffected as the sea has not yet turned rough and triggered high tide as was expected under the impact of new moon since Wednesday. Nine families with their houses fully damaged remain in a camp at Cheriyakkadavu.
