The Kerala High Court on Thursday granted anticipatory bail to Soubin Shahir and Shawn Antony, actor-producer and producer respectively of the Malayalam film Manjummel Boys in a cheating and forgery case that had been registered against them.
The court granted bail on the condition that they would have to produce themselves for questioning before the Maradu police on July 7 and if needed, on July 8. Post questioning, their arrest could be recorded and subsequently released on bail.
The police had registered a case against them on a complaint by Siraj Valiathara Hameed that they did not pay him the share of profit made from the movie that went on to become a hit, although he had contributed ₹7 crore for producing it.
Violation of agreement
He had contended that the producer duo did not even pay him his share of investment for making the movie and that they transferred the profits to their own accounts. This was a violation of the investment agreement he had executed with the producer company.
The police had said that they needed custody of the duo in order to question them with regard to the case. The case had been registered against them over a year ago under Sections 120B (punishment for criminal conspiracy), 34 (common intention), 406 (punishment for criminal breach of trust), 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 468 (forgery for cheating) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
