Two cases of murder, involving three victims, were reported in Tiruvallur district on Wednesday.
On Wednesday night, a 25-year-old youth was hacked to death by an unidentified gang in Perambakkam. The gang hurled country-made bombs before the attack, grievously injuring two of the victim’s friends.
In a separate incident, two youth were hacked to death and their bodies buried on a riverbank near Uthukottai ten days ago. The police unearthed the bodies after one of the suspects confessed to the crime on Wednesday.
Bike-borne gang
In the first incident, at 11 p.m. on Wednesday, Mukesh, 25, a gas cylinder supplier was having a chat with his friends Deepan, 20, and Javid, 21, at Gandhi Nagar in Perambakkam, when unidentified persons entered the scene on motorcycles.
The gang hurled country-made bombs one after another. One of them exploded, injuring the three. Even as they struggled to escape, the suspects attacked them with knives. Mukesh died on the spot while his friends sustained injuries.
On being alerted, police personnel from Mappedu Station reached the spot, and sent them to the.
While the body of Mukesh was sent to the Government General Hospital in Tiruvallur for post-mortem, the other two were admitted to the intensive care unit.
The police have detained five persons and are interrogating them. Police suspect that the attack was carried out due to previous enmity.
Two youth murdered
In the other case, two youth were stabbed to death by three persons following a drunken brawl in Uthukottai, and their bodies were buried on the banks of a river.
The murder came to light when one of the suspects surrendered before the police.
The victims – Akash, 19, and Janakiraman, 19 —were friends from Kachur village near Uthukottai. When they did not return home on June 17, their parents lodged complaints with the Pennalurpet police.
Based on their complaints, the police had launched a search for their friends, who were last seen with them.
Even as the search was on, one of the suspects, Nalampandian, 23, surrendered before a judicial magistrate court in Uthukottai on Wednesday. Based on his confession, the police apprehended two persons Mani, 23 of Kavangarai, and a 17-year-old juvenile.
Police said the trio and the victims, who were close friends, were on the banks of the Arani river behind the Government Hospital on June 17. Akash picked up a quarrel with them and threatened them with a knife. The trio snatched the knife from him and stabbed him to death. When Janakiraman said he would inform others, he too was fatally attacked. The trio then buried the bodies on the river bank.
The police exhumed the bodies in the presence of revenue officials.
