Asking students to contribute to making India environment friendly, Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan on Friday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam programme was helping make the country more green.
“The visionary plan of the Prime Minister is making an impact across the country. It has helped improve the green cover. More than one crore saplings were planted in the country. In Puducherry alone, around 1.5 lakh saplings were planted under the programme,” the Lt. Governor said, addressing students after inaugurating inter-school science festival at Petit Seminaire Higher Secondary School.
The students should spread the message on the need to protect the environment for a safer world. The world is facing several challenges, including the threat from global warming and extinction of species, because of human-inflicted damages to the environment, he said.
The Lt. Governor said students had a bigger role to play in protecting the environment. He urged them to bring about a culture of minimising the use of plastic items.
Speaker R. Selvam was also present.
