A demonstration to protect Pachamalai hill, located behind the Tambaram Sanatorium, was organised by the Environment Awareness and Protection Association (EaPa) on Sunday. Pachamalai serves as a critical catchment area. S. Mohan, head of the EAPA, says if the stones in the area are extracted for quarrying, the natural flow of water to nearby lakes will be disrupted, preventing them from being nourished. Therefore, maintaining the flow is essential. He adds that the hill is ecologically diverse and supports a rich variety of wildlife, and hence it is essential to protect it from urban development.
Hundreds of people gathered around Pachamalai, raising slogans, campaigning for conserving the hill and reducing plastic waste. T.K. Rangarajan, former Member of Rajya Sabha, paediatric surgeon, and urologist Dr.S. Kasi, Madras High Court advocate R. Thirumoorthy, and others, took part in the event.
