The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) Council has approved a resolution to undertake desilting work along the Captain Cotton Canal in Ward 37 of Tondiarpet Zone (IV) at an estimated cost of ₹6.93 crore.
According to the resolution, while the main cost of the work is ₹5.8 crore, an additional ₹2 lakh has been allocated for unforeseen expenses, ₹5.8 lakh for the Tamil Nadu Construction Workers Welfare Board, and over ₹1 crore for Goods and Services Tax (GST).
The civic body said that ward committee resolution details, process order numbers, and specific amounts for overhead, supervision, and quality control are yet to be recorded.
As reported by The Hindu on June 18, the canal in Ezhil Nagar feeding into the Captain Cotton Canal is blocked by weeds, debris, and illegal sewage lines.
Wastewater from homes and garbage dumped by motorists has turned the canal into a dumping ground. Machines used by the civic body do not clear waste under bridges, causing obstructions.
