A special team of police from Sathangadu Police of Avadi City Police has arrested a murder accused who was absconding for the last 29 years and hiding at his native village in Bihar.
Jugal Kishore Sharma, 31, and Mallu Rawat, 35, of Ulle village of Gaya district, Bihar, were working with a private firm in the city as daily wagers. The duo were sitting on a bridge on Buckingham canal on the night of June 7, 1996 and consuming liquor. Inebriated condition, they had a quarrel and Sharma beat Rawat to death by hitting him on the head with a stone. Rawat died on the spot. Following public information, the police recovered the body and investigated.
On the next day, Sathangadu Police arrested the accused Sharma for the murder and remanded him to judicial custody. After being lodged for 45 days, he came out on bail and escaped to his native in Bihar without complying with the bail conditions. Since he continued to fail to appear before the police or court, the court in Thiruvottriyur had issued non-bailable warrants(NBW) repeatedly.
An investigation officer said, “ All these years, our personnel took earnest efforts to nab the accused and repeatedly visited the villages where he was suspected to be hiding. Last time, our men collected clues about his whereabouts when they visited last December. Based on which, our team went to his village called Ulle in Gaya district where he was hiding at a neighbour’s house and caught him on June 24. All these years he was assuming that the police would not come to a faraway place and catch him.”
Police produced him at Gaya court and obtained a transit warrant. He was brought to the city and remanded to judicial custody.
