A taxi driver, who, in an inebriated state, was driving on the wrong side of the road for about 10 km, rammed another car, killing a 23-year-old pregnant woman and her father on the Maduravoyal-Tambaram bypass road on Monday (June 23, 2025) night.
Tambaram police said Padmanabhan, his wife Indrani, and their pregnant daughter Deepika, residing in Santhosapuram near Tambaram, had gone for a birthday party in Ambattur in a call taxi.
As they were returning home on the bypass road on Monday night, another taxi, driven by Manikandan, coming from the wrong direction at high speed, hit their car. While Padmanabhan was killed on the spot, his wife and daughter were admitted to a private hospital in Vanagaram. Deepika died while undergoing treatment.
Chromepet Traffic Investigation police, during investigation, found that driver Manikandan was drunk and had driven the car in the opposite direction for more than 10 km. He has been arrested.
The police have sent the bodies of the two victims to the Chromepet Government Hospital for postmortem examination.
