Work to construct the city’s first Cable-stayed bridge will commence shortly. The bridge, a part of the Chennai Port – Maduravoyal project, will come up near Napier Bridge.
Two more cable-stayed bridges will come up as part of the 20 km long double decker – one at Koyambedu and another at Maduravoyal. Sources in the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) said that each bridge would be 300 metres long and have long spans of 75 metres each. The three bridges will cost ₹180 crore.
Near Napier Bridge, the spot where the elevated corridor crosses onto Swami Sivananda Salai will have a single pier. The ramp will come via Island Grounds. Piling work is expected to commence soon.
At Koyambedu, the corridor will be above the Chennai Metrorail line and at Maduravoyal it will go above the grade separator. The corridor is expected to be completed by February 2027 with around 30% of piling work completed. A total of 4,842 piles are to come up as part of the project that is being carried out under the Bharatmala Pariyojana scheme. The contract agreement for the four-lane elevated corridor was signed under the engineering procurement construction mode on September 11, 2023, and the work order was issued on November 23, 2023.
The project consists of four packages. Components numbering 9,425 for the super structure were being cast at two yards. One of the two tiers of the corridor would have six exits and seven entry points, while the other would directly link the Chennai Port with Maduravoyal.
