An updated list of residents living near landslide-prone areas in Kozhikode district will be prepared soon as part of monsoon preparedness measures to mitigate the impact of natural disasters. Tahsildars from four taluks—Kozhikode, Vadakara, Koyilandy, and Thamarassery—will serve as incident commanders and oversee the process with the support of the respective village authorities.
The District-level Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), which recently convened a meeting to review the district’s preparedness for emergency situations, has drawn up a plan to identify a feasible solution for the speedy relocation of families living in vulnerable areas. District Collector Snehil Kumar Singh, who also serves as the chairman of the DDMA, will directly oversee the process.
According to Revenue department officials, the proposed list will include more locations identified as suitable for setting up emergency relief camps. They said that instructions had also been issued to identify people who might require immediate assistance during evacuation.
In view of the rising number of accidents in waterlogged areas, the DDMA has directed the police and Fire and Rescue Services to prepare and submit daily reports on such locations to enable prompt action. As per the new directive, the officers concerned must submit the updated list to the DDMA by 8 p.m. each day.
“Taluk-level and panchayat-level meetings will be held soon to implement the DDMA’s instructions. The performance of various community rescue volunteers will also be reviewed,” said a senior Revenue department officer from Vadakara. He added that concerns raised by coastal residents on the worsening sea erosion threats had already been forwarded to higher authorities for possible relief measures.
With Kozhikode district placed on orange alert on Thursday (June 26, 2025) following an updated weather forecast by the India Meteorological department, the DDMA urged the public to strictly adhere to safety guidelines. In the wake of heavy rainfall, the water level in the Kakkayam dam rose to 757.50 metres prompting authorities to declare a red alert. A communication from the Kerala State Electricity Board said the shutters would be opened to release excess water in accordance with dam safety protocols.
