Three women including a pregnant woman were assaulted by a police constable when they went to lodge a complaint at KanakammaChatram Police station, in Tiruvallur district. The constable has been suspended following preliminary inquiry.
A video of the policeman attacking the women went viral over social media and political parties including BJP, PMK condemned the act of the policeman.
Police sources said Madhumitha, 38, a Nepali was living with one Manikandan, 31 in Nedumpuram area in Kanakamma Chatram. One Sivaji, 38 reportedly had sent obscene messages to Madhumitha and sexually harassed her. Despite lodging a complaint, there was no action on her complaint.
Madhumitha accompanied by her friends went to his house and informed about his harassment to his wife. In retaliation, Sivaji abused and assaulted them on Sunday night. The trio – Madhumitha, her friends – Sevanthi, 30, a five-month pregnant woman and Dhanam, 30 went to the police station at 2 am. Sivaji and his friend Arun were already at the police station.
The duo asked head constable Raman to send them away from the station. At the insistence of the duo, the constable abused and assaulted them, police sources said.
The three women have been admitted at a government hospital. The injured woman alleged that the constable had received bribe and acted in favour of opposite group. Based on their complaint, the police registered a case against the duo and the constable. Police also registered a counter complaint.
Meanwhile, District Superintendent of Police, Srinivasa Perumal placed the head constable Raman under suspension following a preliminary inquiry.
