The Pattukottai Rail Users’ Association has requested the Southern Railway to introduce a passenger train service from Mayiladuthurai to Rameswaram via the new broadgauge line laid from Peralam to Karaikal.
In a memorandum to the Southern Railway General Manager, association president V. Viveganantham said the revival and opening of the Peralam-Karaikal line marked a significant step in improving connectivity in the central and coastal regions of Tamil Nadu.
In the wake of the opening of Peralam-Karaikal broadgauge line for traffic, the Southern Railway could operate a daily passenger train to Rameswaram from Mayiladuthurai via Peralam, Thirunallar, Karaikal, Nagore, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Pattukottai, and Karaikudi.
Operation of the Mayiladuthurai-Rameswaram passenger service will greatly benefit pilgrims and daily commuters as it would provide them seamless rail connectivity via religious destinations such as Thirunallar, Karaikal, and Nagore, which attract devotees and tourists in large numbers throughout the year.
The introduction of the service would not only serve the travel needs of the public but also provide substantial revenue to the railways considering the high potential along this corridor, Mr. Viveganantham said.
He sought a day time express train from Chennai Egmore to Karaikudi via Mayiladuthurai, Tiruvarur, Thiruthuraipoondi, Muthupet, Adirampattinam, Pattukottai, Peravurani and Aranthangi. This would serve multiple districts that had been demanding proper rail access during the day for a long time.
