Wayanad rains: Dangerous flow of mud submerges Attamala road in Wayanad after heavy rains

Heavy rainfall has severely impacted the Chooralmala region in Wayanad district of Kerala where a suspected landslip has submerged the Attamala road on Wednesday (June 25, 2025).

While officials have ruled out a landslide, local residents have reported a dangerous flow of mud and soil in the area.

The Punnapuzha river is experiencing a drastic rise in water levels, reaching just below the Bailey bridge. Visuals from Soochipara show exceptionally strong currents in the waterfall, fuelling suspicions of a landslide.

Efforts on to rescue labourers

Emergency services, including the Fire and Rescue Services, the police, Irrigation, and Revenue departments, are at the scene. Efforts are under way to rescue labourers stranded at the Attamala tea plantations due to the road submersion.

Authorities have urged calm, stating that no major incidents have been reported beyond the submerged road.

While the strong currents in the Punnapuzha river is a concern, it has reportedly lessened slightly.

However, officials warn that further rainfall in the hill region could lead to increased flow of water. Heavy rains have been consistent since Tuesday night with intermittent showers continuing on Wednesday as well.

No cause for alarm

Residents, many of whom have experienced similar natural disasters, express apprehension, but authorities maintain there is no immediate cause for alarm.
