Tension prevailed in a Government students hostel on Monday night after a group of law students went on a sit-in protest demanding better amenities.
A senior official of the City police said a group of women students of the Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University staged a protest on Saturday and continued it on Monday. The students had raised concerns about hygiene and lack of space in their hostel.
The concerns were raised after the university decided to shift students from the hostel in Chepauk to the one in Perungudi creating space constraints.
Senior police officials along with the college authorities spoke with the students after which they called off the protest.
University Registrar Gowri Ramesh said the students were apprehensive of the changes the university had proposed to undertake.
“We have two hostels, one in Perungudi and one in Chepauk. Since renovation is to be done to the Chepauk hostel, as a stop gap arrangement, we needed to bring the students to the Perungudi campus. We had told them that it is only a temporary accommodation. But the students had an apprehension that it would become a permanent move. We have assured them that it is only a temporary change,” she said.
